Borussia Dortmund has named German international Mats Hummels as their next captain, as revealed recently by the club’s twitter. The new role of the player at the club means the recent persistent rumors linking him to the European big clubs are put to bed.
“Mats Hummels will be the new captain of Borussia Dortmund. Marco Reus and Roman Weidenfeller will be the alternatives”, as quoted from the official twitter account of the club.
The news was divulged after the German giant suffered an embarrassing defeat of 4-0 at the hands of Premier League outfit Liverpool in their last friendly before the start of the new season.
Sebastian Khel had been the pervious captain of Borussia Dortmund and confirmed earlier his decision to step down from the role of the captain after he realized to hand the leadership role to the new generation.
Mats Hummels has been linked with a host of top European clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona, however, the rumors will pacify for time being after the news. Manchester United were believed to have readied an offer in the region of €37 million to test Dortmund’s resolve for the World Cup winner after missing out on Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona
