The 29 years old former Werder Bremen defender has made about 104 appearances for the Germany national team after his debut at the tender age of just 20. The towering defender has decided to bring his ten years of tie-up with international duty to end just few hours ago.
“The main thing for me was that I wanted to be able to decide when my international career would end after ten years myself,” he said.
The Arsenal defender nevertheless is happy to let the young and emerging players to give chance as he seems fully convinced that Germany has wealth of playing talents at disposal.
“There is no reason to fear the future. Young players will come through. Germany are in better shape than ever before.” Mertesacker said.
He is now looking forward to his club career and is poised to win the Premier League and Champions League with Arsenal. He said, “I now want to win the Premier League title with Arsenal and make an impact in the Champions League.”
Germany have claimed the World Cup trophy only few months earlier and have already been dealt with the blow with the retirement of now three long serving players, including former captain Philipp Lahm and Miroslav Klose.
