Sol Campbell believes Arsenal’s signing of Chile international make them one of the teams to watch in this year’s UEFA Champions League.
Former Barca star is the man to make the distinction for Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League this season, says former Gunner Sol Campbell.
The Gunners kick off their European operation on Tuesday against Turkish outfit Besiktas in Istanbul in the first leg of the Champions League play-off.
Arsene Wenger is anxious to make an impact on the tournament after a succession of last 16 exits in recent years, but former England international Sol Campbell believes that new big-money signing Sanchez can take them to the next stage.
“It is essential to bring in players like Alexis who have played in and won giant games in the Champions League,” the Englishman told reporters.
“Alexis understands the tournament. Arsenal have been there a number of times in the Champions League and it is all about every year being in the game and pushing hard.
“We just need that bit of luck to go our way but you also have to put your neck on the line and purchase players – which we are now. You need to be in it to triumph it and that is what Arsenal are trying to do.
“The club is not spending crazily everywhere but if someone comes up they are now prepared to go for it.”
Alexis Sanchez have arrived from Barcelona on the back of a successful World Cup with his national team Chile, and Campbell is sure he will set the Emirates alight.
Sanchez’s ability to drop deep to play ball, and it’s his ability to run in behind the defence line can tear apart the Premier League defense. The Chilean is applauded for his capability to score goals, and it’s his skill to assist them.
The former Udinese man is also very versatile and can feature in a number of different roles, all the while providing a mix of well-developed dynamism and thoughtful subtleness.
“That’s what makes Alexis so extraordinary, and it’s also why Arsene Wenger was ready to spend so much on him.” Campbell concluded.
