Xabi Alonso retires from international football

Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso has called upon his time from international football.

There has been a host of famous players to retire from international football recently, and now Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso has joined them to hang upon his boots from international football.
Alonso announced on Twitter: “I announce my retirement from international football. It’s been an enormous honour for 11 great years. Sincere thanks to everyone involved.”

Alonso made his Spain debut in April 2003 as a 21-year-old and has collected about 114 caps for Spain national team to his name.
“The most difficult thing is know when to say goodbye and, after giving it a lot of thought, I believe that moment has come,” the 32 years old midfielder added. “I have had a glorious time with Spain that started more than 11 years ago, including me forming part of an historic generation which realised the dream of millions of fans, achieving the unique feat of winning the World Cup and two European Championships in four years.”
Xabi Alonso enjoyed a successful international campaign for Spain, where he won World Cup 2010 and two consecutive Euro Cup 2008 and 2012.
Del Bosque was also full of praise for the Madrid midfielder and said “It’s very difficult to improve on what he has done. Together with his peers, he leaves behind a great legacy. He has been a great professional.”
Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked with a move away from Real Madrid with Bayern Munich reportedly his preferred destination.
