Amid the rumors linking Dortmund’s star player Marco Reus with a move, the club CEO has expressed his belief in being able to tie down the player for more years.
The 25 years old Germany international has been a transfer target for a host of top European clubs after reports divulged the player has a release clause of €35 million, which would be only bargain for a player of that quality.
However, the club officials have stressed the player is not of a type that would go after mere pay. “We will have to wait and see whether we can hold on to Marco. But I know him really well and I can say that it’s not about money for him,” Watzke told Der Westen.
Watzke has voiced his desire to see Marco Reus becoming a Dortmund legend rather than leaving his hometown club.
He said, “Marco Reus can carry this club, his club, the club from his hometown. Why is Franz Beckenbauer such a legend in Munich? Wolfgang Overath, Uwe Seeler, Fritz Walter… People still know where these guys played and what they achieved there in 100 years’ time.”
Marco Reus has been pursued by host of top European clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona and most notably Bayern Munich. After seeing two of the star players of the club joining the rival club Bayern Munich, Dortmund have been more critical of speculations linking their another star man Reus to Bayern.
The agile attacker emerged from the youth ranks of Borussia Dortmund and returned to his boyhood club from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2012 for a reported fee of €17.5 million.
