Tottenham’s defender Jan Vertonghen has emerged top target for Luis Enrique’s side, hamrofootball.com understands. Barcelona want a class defender who can compete with or play with Gerard Pique and Matheu Jeremy in the heart of defence. The club officials believe that Vertonghen has all the required qualities to be the defender of Barcelona’s high and ball playing defense.
The former PFA defender of the year will bring some much needed height to Barca defense department particularly fall short due to deployment of Javier Mascherano in center back position in recent years. Vertonghen’s versatility is also a key feature to look at as the Tottenham star can play in center back as well left back position effectively much like former Camp Now favorite Eric Abidal.
Since the Frenchman left the club he has never been replaced by the club and the Catalan head figures believe addition of the Belgian in the squad will replace the Frenchman as the heart of Barcelona defence.
Tottenham will be offered €25m to part with their prized asset as the 27 year old has been their main center back since he was signed from Eredivisie two years ago.
Due to Tottenham’s stable financial conditions they should be tempted with top dollars as indicated by a club’s insider. It is revealed from a closed source that Daniel Levy known as a tough negotiator is willing to agree to sell the ex Ajax man for a fee of €35m.
The 27 year old will be offered a basic salary of €120,000 a week and further bonuses and adds on based on the number of appearances and performances in Catalonia. This is a significant rise in his current €70,000 a week in the North London club. However it remains to be seen if the Belgian will swap the North London for the Camp Nou.
Vertonghen is regarded as one of the best center backs in the Premier League. He is a full international and has recently represented Belgium in the World Cup in their journey to round of 16 before being eliminated by Argentina
