Well connected El Mundo Deportivo journalist Francesc Aguilar has come out with an interesting suggestion today that could change the outlook of the Champions League group stages.
According to Aguilar, some major clubs, alongside the ECA (European Clubs Association) and major broadcasters have pressed UEFA to change the way it chooses the seeded teams.
Up until now, the Champions League pots were decided on co-efficient decided over five years, according to Aguilar this will change, from next season.
Pot 1 will now be made up of seven or eight champions from across Europe depending on whether the winner of the Champions League were victorious in their domestic league.
The seven highest-ranked federations are: Spain, England, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Russia and France.
So, this season, Pot 1 would have been made up of Real Madrid (winners), Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Juventus, CSKA Moscow and PSG.
Obviously, some major clubs are not happy about this development. Pot 2 this year would have been made up of Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona, for example.
It is also not entirely clear into where the winner of the Europa League will go, this may also depend on their league placing.
You can imagine sides like Manchester City would be very keen for this development and would undoubtedly accord the respect champions deserve in Europe’s biggest competition.
