Cristiano Ronaldo gave an up close and personal interview with Portuguese channel TVI earlier this week, in which he was inevitably drawn into speaking about his rivalry with Lionel Messi.
When the interviewer asked Ronaldo his opinion on Lionel Messi winning the World Cup Golden Ball – a very controversial and strange decision, you’ll recall – the Madrid man pleaded the Fifth, in a round about way.
In fact, Ronaldo recalls that strange award so well that he anticipated the question before it was even asked, interjecting ‘You’re talking about him winning the World Cup MVP aren’t you’, before the interviewer could finish.
A wry grin crossed Cristiano’s face as he contemplated how best to answer the question, before realizing that he couldn’t, and instead put some context on it:
‘I think the whold world saw, and people have already analysed for themselves….it would be an interesting question to ask to Messi directly.
Prompted to answer ‘from the depths of his heart’, Ronaldo smiled, ‘I can’t be honest about this, I can’t be honest about this….
‘If I told you everything I thought about that, I’d be sent to prison!’
Ronaldo cracked up at his witty remark, which pretty much put an end to the question.
FIFA have been criticized for being corrupt, sexist, and many other ills, but this is the first suggestion that they may be running a police state.
